NU107 Rock Awards FEARFUL forecast…
Tuesday, November 21st, 2006if there are award results that are damn near impossible for me to predict, the NU107 Rock Awards are it!
case in point: last year, i guessed Bamboo to win Band of the Year and Orange & Lemons to win Listeners’ Choice… well, you know what happened, right?
but the fun in forecasting is in the mistakes! so as the Brits say, i’ll just "carry on" …
Band of the Year: ahhh, ang hirap!!!!! (mommy, ayoko na!) my heart bleeds for Urban Dub and Itchyworms, but my mind says it is really just between Kamikazee and Sandwich… pero parang mahilig ang NU judges sa over-all performance, eh… hindi lang sa fan base, album sales, number of gigs, number of endorsements… may x-factor pa nga yata, eh (",)… but seriously, i’ll bet my ass, i mean, my money on Sandwich.
Listeners’ Choice: Kamikazee! Period! Este, exclamation point pala?
Song of the Year: this year, i feel NU will stay with tradition (which they rarely do) like in 2004 and pick the anthem representative of the period… which is, in this case, Kamikazee’s Narda. Sugod by Sandwich is a good competition, but my sentimental choice is Up Dharma Down’s Oo. pero… sa likod ng mga tala, ang nasusulyap ko’y si Darna.
Album of the Year: can all the nominees win? ang astig kasi lahat, eh.. although i pick the Itchyworms‘ Noontime Show and Urban Dub’s Embrace as frontrunners… if NU pick judges with the likes of Jim Paredes on board, i’ll go for the first… pero if they choose the Mike Villegas types, i’d say it’s the second… since i really don’t know, i’d just pick Noontime Show by the Itchyworms.
Best New Artist: UP DHARMA DOWN! UP DHARMA DOWN! UP DHARMA DOWN!!!!
In The Raw: tamang senti ako dito… i’ll go for Silent Sanctuary.
Rising Sun: Itchyworms really made the biggest jump this year to other pop stations, who probably didn’t know that the boys made their debut last 2001 pa, bagging Best New Artist at that year’s Rock Awards. (note: this is the only award I predicted right last year.)
Best Live Act: Join The Club and Imago can pull an upset, but i’ll pick Kamikazee over Sandwich on this one.
Best Music Video: no doubt in my mind, Sugod by Sandwich is the best… Marie Jamora rocks!!!
Best Album Package: i like the concept of Kamikazee’s Maharot… parang iisa ang gumawa ng design concept ng Five On The Floor ng Sandwich at Blush ng Imago, pero hindi naman… but i like the package cover of 6cyclemind’s Panorama album the best.
Producer of the Year: all six album producers are probably deserving to win, that’s why they are nominated… doesn’t make sense? like the reason for my choice: parang ang linis kasi pakinggan nung mga kanta na galing sa album nila, kahit hataw na yung guitars and drums…kaya I predict to win the producers of Embrace by Urban Dub.
Best Male: in bed? joke (",) !!! Oh, it’s Best Male Rock Icon! my choice really is Sir Raims, but Bamboo MaƱalac should really get it this time.
Best Female: i want Aia de Leon to win again, but I really think Barbie Almalbis is Rock Iconic enough this year.
Vocalist of the Year: Aia de Leon (Imago) and Raimund Marasigan (Sandwich) are obvious choices… Urban Dub and Kamikazee songs are too good, i tend not to notice Jay Contreras‘ and Gabby Alipe’s voices… so, i will pick either the last two: but down the line, I pick Armi Millare of Up Dharma Down over Dicta License’s Pochoy Labog.
Guitarist of the Year: sus! wala naman akong alam dito, eh… but i like to limit the guitar rifts that i like hearing to two: songs of Dicta License and songs of Urban Dub. I choose Dicta License’s Boogie Romero, however, over Urban Dub’s John Dinopol.
Bassist of the Year: my sentiments really are going for Maps Academia (Imago/Sandwich) and Lalay Lim (Urban Dub), either one deserve a first Bassist of the Year award.. but somehow, my thoughts all point out to Dok Sergio of Pupil… it’s like i can’t imagine a Pupil song without the deep plucks of a base guitar!
Drummer of the Year: if only for his blatant plug, "ako lang ang iboto n’yo", when their band dropped by NU107 to campaign, i’ll pick Paolo Santiago of Join the Club hands down… of course, he was joking and so was I (",)… I really hope for John Mendoza of Urban Dub to make it 2 in a row for Cebu.
Hall of Fame: eto lagi ang surprise of the night, eh… but why do i get the feeling that a second 90’s band will join the Eraserheads on the elite list? no, I’m not talking about Rivermaya, because Mike and Japs are not Rivermaya-tenure-Hall-of-Fame material yet… am talking about Parokya Ni Edgar… what they have accomplished in their long career, since bagging Best New Artist in 1996, is mind-boggling… without a single member change, they coasted through 3 Band of the Year Awards and they led the drive to keep pinoy band music alive in that long spell between those two periods of band explosions in the country in 1994-1997 and 2004-present… but then again, i could be wrong. (",)
there you go! 18 awards, one spectacular night! Dec. 1, 2006… i will find out how awfully inaccurate i was… again! (",)
